Chris found his way into the kitchen through his wife’s
stomach.
Parule was pregnant in 1999. Billy Blu to be was in the waiting
womb and his mother was craving Indian food – and it
had to be special to satisfy her picky palate. Unfortunately
none of the local curry house artists had the right dishes
in their palette, so twice a week Chris had to journey to
downtown DC in search of Indian dishes for his pregnant princess.
Chris soon wearied of these excursions and started to balk
at the cost of his wife's cravings. He complained. Princess
Parule announced “Well darling, why don’t you
cook me a curry?”
Chris cooked a Chicken Korma from a Nigel Slater book and
it was not half bad. He did it again – even better.
He then found Parule’s old Madhur Jaffrey book (unused)
and tried some recipes – soon his spice collection exploded
and the chemist was successfully making his own curries.
Soon all of Chris’ friends wanted to come for dinner
and they kept coming for dinner even after they moved out
of DC – and their rave reviews spread far and wide.
Chris was rapidly inundated with requests to cook for special
occasions and to
be a personal chef.
In addition to taking orders from his wife, Chris also was
getting orders from friends who pestered him to publish his
“weekly home menu” on the web so that they could
swing by for takeout meals on their way home – this
is how the “curry club” concept began. Chris realized
he needed a larger home base to satisfy the growing ranks
of his club and that is what led to the launch of curry club
restaurant.
